Need website design and hosting for your ebook?

The next step to getting your ebook on the Net is to make a few decisions about how and where you are going to sell it.

So, let's take this step by step....

1. An absolute MUST is a domain name! A domain name is the identifying name of your site - for example - ebookgraphics.com. There can also be .biz sites, .info sites, .net sites, etc - .com is not the only kind! On the Net, the domain name is how people find you. So, you want your domain name to be self-explanatory and easy to find.

I usually recommend that people get their domain name first. There are a couple of reasons for that. First of all, if you come up with a name you like, you can lock it in early. I used to wait until I had my sites set up, but after losing a couple of good names to quicker fingers, I decided to get the name, then do the site! Secondly, they are so cheap, just do it! I suggest http://www.godaddy.com - each name is only $8.95 (or less) per year. (The place where you buy your name is called a "Registrar.") The final reason is that there has to be a little time allowed for the name to "propagate"... what that means is after you buy the name, it will take anywhere from 12-72 hours for the name to propagate throughout the Net. (Basically, make all the other computers aware that it is now here and waiting to be found.)

2. Once you have your domain name, you need a host. The host is the computer where your website will "live." Here's what happens - when you sign up with any host, they will give you some "DNS numbers" which you then plug into a form on the registrar's site (where you bought your domain name.) The DNS numbers identify the computer where your website is stored. Now the registrar can track your website, and let everyone know where it is located.) If you change hosts, the DNS numbers will also change. There are tons of hosts out there. You'll even be offered hosting when you buy your domain name. And, hosting runs the gamut of prices - anywhere from free to hundreds of $$ per month.

I offer hosting because many of my ebook design clients need it, and prefer staying with someone they know. My sites are $6.50 a month - you can find out more about it (and sign up if you're ready) here... ebookgraphics hosting Info...

3. OK - now for the website itself. Let's talk a bit about what you actually need in a website. At it's most basic level, you just need a sales page to sell your ebook, and a way to take orders. That's simple enough, right? Websites are created from your copy by writing HTML code. There are also some WYSIWYG HTML editing programs out there that will help you if you don't know HTML coding - like FrontPage, SiteSpinner, Dwarf, Antenna, etc. Also there are tons of free and paid website templates that you can use to base your site on. The components of a webpage are pretty simple - some kind of header (usually graphic - see the header below.)

Then there is the sales letter itself, and finally an order button and a graphic of the ebook cover. You can also expand that as you like. If you look on the header above, he has additional pages for a blog, exercises, contact, a faq, etc. All of those pages also have the header on them and most have an order button somewhere as well, plus, when you get past a single page, you need some navigation to help people get around your site. Actually, HTML coding is not all that difficult, but just like designing and creating an ebook, some people would rather not do-it-themselves. I can do it for you. Costs are listed in the charts below. Here are some additional header samples...Header Samples...

4. That takes us through the process of getting the website started. There are many additional issues - protecting your ebook, processing the sales, marketing, etc. But let's take it one step at a time...

Website Pricing and Ordering

Decide what pages you want to have on your site. The main sales page is a given, but what else? A blog is a good idea (it will help with your marketing), maybe you want a separate order page, or an "about me" or contact page, a links page, maybe a preview of the ebook - intro, table of contents, etc. You may want to set up a popup to get people's names and email addresses to create a mailing list. There are an infinite number of ways to structure your website.

Do some thinking and decide how complex you want your site to be - and how much time you want to have to put into it. A 1-page sales site doesn't need much care - just set it up and forget it and go on to the next project. A blog, though, will require at least some input from you - either to post new items that you write yourself, or posting articles you get elsewhere. If you also offer consulting services. or have other sites or services you want to promote, you may need something more complex than just a single page sales site. You could get as complex as my site - actually, I've kind of created a "home" with my site. I have a little of everything here! You may not want to have to deal with something the size of this site - then again, you might want to do just what I did and create a real "home" page! It's up to you...
